Tashkent’s Applied Arts Museum: looking closely at the house and collection

2026-10-26 09:20 Tashkent Culture and history Places and walks

The Applied Arts Museum connects beautiful objects with everyday life and craftsmanship. The building, also known as the Polovtsov House, is part of the experience alongside the exhibits. Rather than trying to remember every name, choose a few materials and compare the work of different makers.

Look at the house first

Begin with the accessible parts of the courtyard and façade. Notice the transition from open space to decorated rooms, together with the carved and painted details. The house becomes part of the visit rather than simply a backdrop for display cases.

Avoid explaining every pattern through a single universal symbol. For a particular date, maker’s name or interpretation, consult the museum label or a member of staff. Careful observation is more useful than an impressive but unverified legend.

Choose two or three crafts

The official museum description lists ceramics, suzani embroidery, traditional clothing, jewellery, carpets and other works. For a first visit, ceramics and embroidery make a manageable starting point, with a third subject added according to your interests.

With a ceramic piece, look at its shape, decoration and the finish of the rim. With embroidery, compare the scale of the pattern, how densely it fills the fabric and the colour combinations. Comparing objects with similar uses makes differences clearer than moving quickly between unrelated attractive pieces.

Use the visit to understand your taste

The museum can help you discover which materials and techniques appeal to you before shopping for a souvenir. Note the name of an object type or a detail you particularly like. This does not mean that a similar item at a bazaar has the same age, origin or quality.

When shopping later, ask separate questions about the seller, material and method of production. A museum exhibit is not a certificate for a modern purchase. Before taking photographs, check the current rules, particularly around individual displays.

Preparing for an independent visit

Search your map for the full name of the Applied Arts Museum on Rakatboshi Street so that you do not confuse it with the State Museum of Arts. Check the current entrance, opening hours and admission price shortly before your visit; the official descriptions used here do not provide a confirmed current price list.

Allow roughly an hour to an hour and a half for a relaxed introduction, with room to linger in a favourite gallery. This is a planning suggestion. Avoid placing your next fixed appointment immediately afterwards: a small museum is often more rewarding when you can stop and look again.
