Hazrati Imam: what to see and how to visit

Tashkent Places and walks
Hazrati Imam architectural complex illuminated in the evening in Tashkent
Hazrati Imam is a rewarding place to begin exploring Tashkent. First take in the open square, domes and minarets; then look more closely at the portals, tilework and individual buildings.
Read the ensemble as a whole
The complex includes Barak Khan Madrasah, Tillya Sheikh Mosque and the Kaffal Shashi Mausoleum. These places belong to different chapters of the city’s history. Looking at how they relate to one another makes the visit richer than treating the ensemble as a single monument.
Prepare for an unhurried visit
Bring comfortable shoes and water. Modest clothing covering shoulders and knees is a sensible choice for religious spaces. Follow signs and staff instructions at each entrance, including any requirements about footwear.
Take thoughtful photographs
A wide view of the square gives a sense of scale; a close view of an ornament reveals craftsmanship. Ask about photography inside buildings. Avoid photographing worshippers without their consent.
Continue through the Old City
Combine the complex with nearby old neighbourhoods, then continue towards Chorsu and Kukeldash. An evening return can offer a different view of the illuminated architecture.
Check access, opening arrangements and entry charges shortly before visiting. These can change. See Hazrati Imam on the tour itinerary →

Look at the square on two scales
First find a viewpoint for the domes and portals, then get closer to the patterns and wooden details. Barak Khan and Muyi Muborak give us places to discuss the ensemble’s history before continuing along Zarkaynar Street. Do not make entry to a particular room essential to your day: access may be restricted or unavailable. Ask locally about entry and photography, respect worshippers and request permission before photographing people.
