The Afrosiyab Museum reveals a Samarkand that predates its famous Timurid domes. It is a rewarding choice for travellers interested in archaeology and the earlier layers of urban history.
Why visit
After the Registan, the museum changes the scale of the story: archaeological finds, wall paintings and explanations replace monumental façades. Rather than memorising every date, follow one theme through the displays—trade, domestic life or the representation of people.
Give the displays your attention
Allow around an hour to an hour and a half according to your interests. This is more than a cool break between outdoor sights; the labels deserve time. Ask whether information or staff guidance is available in a language you understand.
Distinguish museum and archaeological site
Check which spaces are open and what your ticket includes. The museum and the ancient settlement area are different kinds of visit. Outdoors, carry water, protect yourself from the sun and remain on permitted paths. An observatory visit can fit the same outing if you leave room for transfers and a rest.
