Your first trip to Samarkand: how to plan it

Samarkand works best as a series of neighbourhood visits rather than a race to collect every blue dome. Choose two or three priorities first: the Registan, the mausoleums or the everyday life of the bazaar.

Start with a manageable area

Give the Registan and the direction towards Bibi-Khanym and Siyob Bazaar their own outing. Leave Gur-e-Amir for another visit. Avoid making Shah-i-Zinda your final compulsory stop before a train: its details deserve attention, not a countdown.

Build around your departure

For a day trip, book your return train before planning sightseeing. Include station transfers, a meal, ticket queues and a departure buffer. With two nights, you can separate the monumental ensembles from the museums and enjoy both at an easier pace.

Prepare the essentials

Save your accommodation and planned stops on an offline map. Budget for each paid attraction separately rather than assuming a city-wide pass. Wear shoes suited to paving and steps. A successful itinerary leaves enough energy for a relaxed pot of tea at the end.
