The Registan is an ensemble of three madrasahs—Ulugh Beg, Sher-Dor and Tilla-Kari—not simply a façade for a photograph. Looking at them individually makes the visit far more rewarding.
What to notice
Start with the square as a whole: the arrangement of portals, their proportions and colours. Then choose one feature inside each building, such as a courtyard, a decorative pattern or an interior. You do not need architectural training to see the differences.
Allow room to explore
Around two hours is a useful planning allowance, not a compulsory visit length. Save souvenir browsing for later so that it does not consume your sightseeing time. If you hope to return for evening light, ask whether your ticket permits re-entry before leaving.
Check the ticket conditions
Use the ensemble’s ticket website to confirm the visitor category, date and spaces included. Seeing the square from outside can make a pleasant separate evening outing, but it does not replace entering the courtyards. Do not assume that a light show or a special viewpoint is included in ordinary admission.
