Shopping in Bukhara becomes more interesting when you can ask about the maker’s work. A textile, miniature or small doll means more when you understand how it was produced.

Compare materials and methods

Ask where an item was made and which stages were done by hand. Look at the reverse of embroidery and the support and technique of a painting. A shop in a historic building does not prove an item’s age or local origin.

Ask about everyday use

Check washing, fading and care requirements. For an artist’s work, request the maker’s name and a written description on the receipt. Agree on shipping and damage arrangements in writing before paying.

Leave time to decide

Browse several shops and return to a favourite. A polite refusal is fine; ask before photographing merchandise. Check packaging for fragile pieces. For old objects or possible cultural property, establish current export rules and documents separately. A seller’s reassurance is not a substitute for official requirements.
